Hello, Afton Community, During a routine inspection by district maintenance staff, a leak was detected in an aboveground diesel tank that is used for utility vehicle fill-ups for the District and Village of Afton. The tank is located on Court Street, on school property, but not in close proximity to teaching and learning environments or water supplies. The tank is located on Court Street, on school property, but not in close proximity to teaching and learning environments or water supplies. Maintenance crews identified the leak at approximately 1:30 pm as the school day was nearing completion, and immediately alerted the administration. The administration, per standard protocol, contacted the New York State Department of Environmental Conversation (DEC) and DCMO BOCES Health and Safety Management Department. DEC provided all expert technical support and arranged for a NYS-qualified contractor to facilitate a comprehensive clean-up process, cleansing and securing of the tank, and excavation of any contaminated soil in the immediate area. After reviewing detailed site maps, DEC indicated to the District that the diesel tank leak does not pose a threat to the school district or community and that it has been successfully contained to a very limited area immediately proximate to the tank on Court Street. Thursday's after-school activities proceeded as normally scheduled and Friday’s school calendar will not be impacted. Thank you, Terrance P.
